To support children in their emotional development, we can break things down into simple parts that can be woven together as understanding and familiarity develop. First, having the ability to name emotions. Second, developing the skills to describe and communicate about them. Third, finding tools for managing them. This asks of us to work alongside our children to develop our own emotional awareness. These three steps are great practice for adults too!
Play & Learn At Home
Here are some tips from John Gottman to try at home to help you walk this path with your child(ren):

~Be aware of your child’s emotions.

~Recognize emotion as an opportunity for connection or teaching.

~Help your child verbally label emotions.

~Communicate empathy and understanding.

~Guide behavior and problem solve.
